Minor Rugby
|Flag Rugby is a form of modified rugby for players age 5 – 12.
For players up to the age of 10 it is non-contact and has its own rules for play.
For instance, teams have equal sides of no more than 7 players. Play is similar to 15s style rugby, but players use “flagging” instead of tackles.
- Defender (flagger) removes the flag, shouts “FLAG”, then stands still holding flag aloft (until flagee retrieves the flag).
- Flagger must not move or rejoin play until the flag is given back. Referee shouts “FLAG!…PASS!”.
- Play does not stop!
- Ball carrier (flagee) must stop running and pass the ball within 3-secs/3-steps – flagee must not rejoin play until his/her flag is retrieved.
- If a player/s does not pass the ball within 3-sec/3 steps then they are liable for a penalty and a change of possession.
- Flagee, having passed the ball, retrieves his/her flag from the flagger and reattaches flag. Both players may now rejoin play.
Players aged 10 and 11 are introduced to contact through a modified contact form of flag rugby. It is a combination of traditional 15s rules plus rule of flag. It’s a fantastic way to get players used to contact so they are prepared when they transition to full contact in U14s.
Flag rugby leagues are administered by Rugby Ontario, which holds a number of Festivals throughout the province during the summer, wrapping up the season with a huge Mini Festival the first weekend of September.
This summer Rugby Ontario is introducing Kick Off Rugby, a new program aimed at introducing rugby to boys and girls age 6 – 9 . The program is an entry point for children, focusing on developing fundamental skills in a rugby environment.
Please see below a list of Festivals being held throughout the province. Come out to see what amazing young rugby players we are developing!
